Tips For Healthy Teeth At Every Age
Receding gums, dry mouth caused by medication, or dentures that cause discomfort — as we age, our teeth and oral health naturally change. The good news: with the right habits, your smile can stay healthy at any age.
Table Of Contents
Choosing the Right Toothbrush
- Electric toothbrush over manual: cleans more effectively while being gentler on gums and enamel.
- Opt for a larger handle: handle grips for standard manual toothbrushes can help with limited finger mobility.
- Interdental brushes for hard-to-reach areas: ideal for spaces between teeth, exposed tooth necks, and areas under bridges.
- Three-sided toothbrush as an alternative: cleans all tooth surfaces simultaneously — particularly helpful for those with limited motor skills.
Healthy Oral Mucosa
- Reduced saliva flow increases the risk of tooth decay: dry mouth is a common side effect of medication and hormonal changes.
- Drink at least 2 liters of water daily — ideally spread throughout the day rather than in large amounts at once.
- Sugar-free lozenges between meals help stimulate saliva production.
- Apply fluoride gel once a week: strengthens enamel and provides additional protection against tooth decay.
Proper Denture Care
- Always use a denture brush for cleaning — specifically designed for the surface of dental prosthetics.
- Important: clean dentures without toothpaste — regular toothpaste contains abrasives that can damage dentures.
- Have dentures adjusted regularly: the jawbone and mucosa change over time, and ill-fitting dentures can cause pressure sores.
- Schedule a check-up 1–2 times a year: we assess the mucosa, check denture fit, and take X-rays if needed.
Mindful Nutrition for Strong Teeth
- Drink at least 2 liters of water daily — to prevent dry mouth and help rinse away food residue.
- Reduce sugary foods: cakes, chocolate, and sweetened beverages promote tooth decay, especially with reduced saliva flow.
- Avoid highly acidic foods and drinks: coffee, lemons, or tap water with lemon juice can erode tooth enamel.
- Sugar-free lozenges as a snack alternative: stimulate saliva production while protecting your teeth.
