Periodontitis – What Can Be Done?
A Holistic Approach to a Healthy Periodontium
Periodontitis is one of the most common diseases of the periodontium and often goes unnoticed for a long time. In this article, you will learn what causes it, which symptoms are typical, and how you can support your dental health.

What Exactly Is Periodontitis?
Periodontitis is an inflammation of the entire periodontium – the structures that support and anchor the teeth. It affects the gums, cementum, and jawbone. As a result, both bone and gum tissue can recede, which may ultimately lead to loosening and loss of teeth.
What makes periodontitis particularly insidious is that many affected individuals do not notice the inflammation for a long time, which is why it is also referred to as a “silent inflammation.” Possible warning signs include bleeding gums during interdental cleaning or teeth that appear visually “longer” than before.
Because periodontitis is a systemic condition, it can affect the entire body – for example, in connection with diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
The good news is that with regular dental check-ups and targeted treatment, the progression of the disease can be slowed, stabilized, or even fully resolved.
How Is Periodontitis Treated?
As periodontitis is a chronic condition, successful treatment addresses several key areas:
The foundation is individual education and consultation for our patients. Building on this, periodontal treatment involves targeted bacterial reduction – or professional biofilm management – carried out by specialized dental professionals and dentists, accompanied by supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) as long-term aftercare.
In addition, improving oral hygiene and oral health, as well as strengthening the immune system – for instance through plant-based products or probiotics – play an important role in the long-term success of treatment.
How Does Periodontal Treatment Work?
Regular periodontal treatments are essential to slow, stabilize, and ideally reverse the progression of the disease. The primary focus is on reducing harmful bacteria. Under local anesthesia and in a relaxed atmosphere, we remove the biofilm in which inflammation-causing bacteria accumulate. We rely on state-of-the-art, particularly gentle technology such as ultrasound and AirFlow. Even the water used during treatment is pre-warmed to prevent cold sensitivity.
Tip: To support your oral health at home, we also recommend our plant-based dental product line as ideal support for the lasting success of your treatment.
